Public transport

Operator. TUSSAM (Transportes Urbanos de Sevilla, S.A.M.) operates the city bus network and the single tram line T1 (Metrocentro) through the city center. Metro de Sevilla Sociedad Concesionaria, on behalf of the Junta de Andalucía, operates the single subway Line 1 between Ciudad Expo and Olivar de Quintos. Renfe operates the Cercanías suburban trains as well as the long-distance service from Santa Justa station. The Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano del Área de Sevilla (CTAS) coordinates fares between the metro, Cercanías, and the city and metropolitan buses of 45 municipalities via a shared fare card. This card is valid on TUSSAM's regular scheduled services, but not on special services such as the EA airport bus or Feria special trips.

Network. One tram line, one metro line and buses. The centre is comfortably walkable.

Modes of transport. Bus · Tram · Metro · Cercanías suburban trains

Operating hours. TUSSAM bus lines start, depending on the line, between 5.54 am and 7.10 am and mostly end between 11.15 pm and 12.29 am, with individual lines such as the 29 running until 2.30 am. Tram T1 (Metrocentro) runs from 6.51 am to 11.51 pm. Metro Line 1 runs Monday to Thursday from 6.30 am to 11 pm, on Fridays and the eve of public holidays until 2 am, on Saturdays from 7.30 am to 2 am, and on Sundays and public holidays from 7.30 am to 11 pm, in each case until the last departure at the terminus stations. Airport bus EA runs continuously, toward the city center from 4.30 am to 12.05 am, toward the airport from 5.22 am to 1 am.

Night service. TUSSAM operates its own night line network with a separate timetable. Lines A7 and A8 serve Santa Justa station at night, lines A4 and N29 serve San Bernardo station. Airport bus EA runs without a break all night, with the last departure toward the airport at 12.05 am and the last arrival in the city at 1 am. Metro Line 1 extends its service until 2 am on Fridays, the eve of public holidays, and Saturdays, while on Sundays and weekdays it ends already at 11 pm. Tram T1 stops service daily around 11.51 pm.

Buying tickets. On TUSSAM you buy single tickets from the driver or pay cashlessly directly with a contactless bank card when boarding, with no need to buy a ticket beforehand. Stored-value cards such as the Multiviaje or Turística card are available at the three TUSSAM sales points (Prado de San Sebastián, Plaza Ponce de León, Avenida de Andalucía 11) as well as at around 700 further sales points such as kiosks and tobacco shops around the city, plus online via tussam.es. Airport bus EA additionally sells its single ticket at the counter and at vending machines in the airport's arrivals hall, as well as online via QR code, which is then valid for one hour from purchase. For the metro, tickets are bought at vending machines in every station, online via metro-sevilla.es, or through the Metro de Sevilla app. The Consorcio's fare card costs a one-time 1.50 € issuing fee and can be topped up with a minimum of 5 € and a maximum of 500 €.

App and payment. TUSSAM accepts direct payment by contactless EMV bank card when boarding on all bus and tram lines, with no need to buy a physical ticket beforehand. For managing and topping up stored-value cards, there is the TUSSAM app. Metro de Sevilla offers the same option with its Tap&Go system, letting you check in directly at the access gate with your own contactless bank card and be charged automatically, either after registering the card in advance or unregistered as an occasional user. For timetable information and topping up the Bonometro card, there is additionally the Metro de Sevilla app. Cash is still accepted on board the EA airport bus.

Which ticket. For individual rides, TUSSAM's Billete Univiaje at 1.40 € is enough. Anyone riding several times a day comes out cheaper with the rechargeable Multiviaje card, at 0.76 € per ride with Transbordo (a transfer within 60 minutes) or 0.69 € per ride without Transbordo, and with the 40 percent discount decided through the end of 2025 and still in effect through at least August 2026, 0.46 € or 0.41 € respectively. For short visits there is the Turística card at 5 € (1 day) or 10 € (3 days), costing as much as 3.6 or 7.1 single rides respectively, but it is not valid on the EA airport line. For the metro, the Bono de 1 día at 4.50 € pays off from the fourth ride of the day, costing as much as 3.3 single rides in the cheapest zone (0 zone jumps, 1.35 €) or 5.5 rides with the topped-up Bonometro card (0.82 € per ride at 0 zone jumps, 0.49 € with the 40 percent discount). For the EA airport bus there is a dedicated ticket at 6 € per single ride or 8 € for a round trip on the same and the following day, the regular Multiviaje or Turística card is not valid here.

Fare zones. The metro has three fare zones. The central stations Puerta Jerez, Prado de San Sebastián, and San Bernardo all lie within the same zone, so trips between them cost the lowest fare with no zone jump. Zones play no role on TUSSAM buses and the tram.

Tip. In summer avoid the midday heat and keep to the shade of the alleys.

Getting there

Main station

Location. North-east of the centre, with buses and the tram running directly.

Long-distance trains. Santa Justa lies around a 10-minute walk northeast of the old town and serves Cercanías, regional, long-distance, and AVE high-speed trains on national routes as well as a few international connections. At around 80,000 square meters, it is Spain's third-largest station by passenger numbers. Facilities include luggage storage, ticket counters and vending machines, a Sala Club lounge, customer service, parking, a taxi rank, car rental, restaurants, and accessible access with the ACERCA assistance service.

Opening hours. Open weekdays except public holidays from 4.30 am to 12.30 am, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 5.15 am to 12.30 am.

Local quirks

• The orange trees are decoration. The fruit is bitter and inedible. It's harvested and made into marmalade, often for export.
• Feria and Semana Santa bring their own bus timetables. During Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril, TUSSAM reroutes numerous lines and runs special timetables, because processions and the fairground close off streets in the center. There is even a dedicated Feria ticket for that, at 1.60 €.
• The fare card also unlocks a bike share. With the Consorcio's Tarjeta de Transporte you can take a bike from the Bus+Bici program at the Plaza de Armas bus station, as long as the bike stock isn't exhausted. Cardholders can also charge their e-scooters there for free.

Speed limits. built-up areas 20/30/50 km/h (tiered), outside towns 90 km/h, motorway 120 km/h

Since May 2021, a three-tier system has applied within built-up areas instead of a single uniform value. 20 km/h on streets with a single level for the roadway and sidewalk, 30 km/h on streets with one lane per direction, and 50 km/h only from two lanes per direction upward. As a result, most inner-city streets are now limited to 30 km/h, which surprises visitors from countries with a uniform 50 km/h. A dense network of fixed and mobile speed cameras enforces this consistently, and fines on rental cars often arrive by mail only weeks later.

Tipping. Not expected. A few coins or five percent for good service is plenty.

Tolls. Some motorways are tolled, recognisable by AP in the name. Routes marked A are free.

Access restrictions. Cities above 50,000 inhabitants must set up low emission zones. Madrid and Barcelona enforce by camera, and foreign vehicles must register online in advance.
