Public transport

Operator. Three operators share the network. ANM, the Azienda Napoletana Mobilità, is owned by the city and runs Metro Linea 1 and Linea 6, the four funiculars Centrale, Chiaia, Montesanto, and Mergellina, the tram lines 412, 421, and 422, the trolleybus lines 201, 202, 204, and 254, and all city and suburban buses. ANM also operates public elevators, including the Ascensore Monte Echia. Metro Linea 2 is not a metro in terms of the operator, but a Trenitalia rail line. The regional trains Cumana, Circumflegrea, Circumvesuviana, and MetroCampaniaNordEst belong to EAV. Above all of this sits the Consorzio Unico Campania, which integrates fares across the region. In practice this means there are two separate ticket worlds. A pure ANM ticket is valid on buses, trolleybuses, trams, Metro 1 and 6, and the funiculars. It is explicitly not valid on Linea 2, Cumana, Circumflegrea, and Circumvesuviana. Anyone crossing operator boundaries needs the integrated TIC ticket, which is valid across all network operators, including ANM, Trenitalia, EAV, CTP, CLP, and AIR Avellino.

Network. Two metro lines plus funiculars up the hill. Some stations are works of art.

Modes of transport. Metro · Funicular · Tram · Trolleybus · Bus · Suburban train · Public elevator

Operating hours. Metro Linea 1 runs from Sunday to Thursday from Piscinola from 6 am to 10.30 pm and from Centro Direzionale from 6.15 am to 11 pm. The frequency is every 10 minutes between 6 am and 8 pm, then every 14 minutes. Metro Linea 6 is a morning line. From Municipio to Mostra the first train departs at 7.36 am, the last at 2.50 pm, in the other direction from 7.30 am to 2.44 pm, at a 14-minute frequency. The funiculars all start at 7 am and run every 10 minutes. Montesanto and Mergellina close at 10 pm. The Funicolare Centrale runs until 10.30 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, and until 12.30 am on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The Funicolare Chiaia runs until 10.30 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and until 12.30 am on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. On the Centrale, from 8.30 am there is a direct run every 30 minutes with no stop at Petraio and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. On the Mergellina, direct runs operate between 9.30 am and 9.30 pm.

Night service. On Fridays and Saturdays, ANM extends service on Linea 1. The last departure is at 1.20 am from Piscinola and at 1.32 am from Centro Direzionale. On those nights, the connecting passage between Linea 1 and Linea 2 at Museo station already closes at 11.15 pm, and the exit toward the harbor at Municipio station closes at 10 pm. The Centrale and Chiaia funiculars run until 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays, and until either 10.30 pm or 12.30 am on other days depending on the weekday. Night buses run on the city lines N1, N3, N5, N6, and N7, plus the suburban lines 455, 460, 472, and 475. Lines N2, N4, N8, and N8S are suspended. The N1 connects Piazzale Tecchio with Piazza Garibaldi and runs every day of the week, though with only five departures from Brin, at 11.30 pm, midnight, 12.30 am, 1 am, and 4.40 am.

Buying tickets. Tickets are sold at vending machines in the metro and funicular stations, at the Unico counters in the Linea 1 stations Garibaldi, Toledo, Università, and Vanvitelli, and at the authorized sales points of the Consorzio Unico Campania, which are mainly tobacco shops, kiosks, and bars. Through the PuntoLIS and Lottomatica, Drop Point, and Mooney networks, tickets are also available as a Thermobon with a QR code. These vouchers are valid for 120 minutes, valid for a single ride on a single ANM vehicle, require the start and destination to be stated at purchase, and are never refundable. Validity can be set for a later time up to five days in advance. For the Alibus, the driver sells tickets on board, and there are also vending machines at the exit of the arrivals terminal. Every ticket must be validated when boarding, including when transferring, and must be kept until leaving the station. For day, week, month, and annual passes, an ID check may be requested.

App and payment. ANM sells tickets through the UnicoCampania app, along with MyCicero and the Gira Napoli app. The Alibus can also be booked online through Trenitalia platforms in combination with a train ticket. Tickets bought via app must be actively started at the beginning of the trip. SMS purchase is limited and only valid for surface lines and the Funicolare di Chiaia. Without a ticket, you can use Tap&Go, simply tapping your contactless payment card directly on the gate. Tap&Go is enabled on Linea 1, Linea 6, the four funiculars, the Ascensore Monte Echia, and the Alibus line. Buses, trams, and trolleybuses do not have these gates, so a ticket must be bought in advance there.

Which ticket. For the Urbano Napoli city area, two price lists apply side by side. Under the ANM house tariff, a single ride in Category A costs 1.30 Euro and is valid on funiculars and city buses. A single ride in Category B costs 1.50 Euro and is required for Metro Linea 1, Metro Linea 6, and suburban bus lines. The ANM day ticket costs 4.50 Euro, the seven-day ticket 13.50 Euro, the monthly ticket 35.00 Euro. Under the integrated TIC fare, the 90-minute time ticket costs 1.80 Euro and also allows rides with other operators within that time. The integrated day ticket costs 5.40 Euro, the seven-day ticket 16.20 Euro, the monthly ticket 42.00 Euro. All day tickets are valid until midnight of the day of validation, not for 24 hours from purchase. The seven-day ticket is valid until midnight of the sixth day after the first validation. Two verifiable thresholds help with the choice. The integrated day ticket at 5.40 Euro costs exactly as much as three time tickets at 1.80 Euro each. The ANM day ticket at 4.50 Euro costs exactly as much as three single metro rides at 1.50 Euro each. A special case is the Alibus. Its ticket costs 5.00 Euro and cannot be replaced by regular passes or the Artecard. As an integrated 90-minute time ticket, it also covers further rides in the city area besides the Alibus trip itself. Anyone who buys a Campania Artecard with transport included can travel unlimited within the UnicoCampania network.

Fare zones. Within the city of Naples, a single fare tier applies, Urbano Napoli. It applies whenever the start and destination are both within the municipality. Trips into the surrounding area, for example to Pompeii, Herculaneum, or Sorrento, fall into distance classes from NA1 to NA16 and cost extra.

Tip. Toledo station is reckoned one of Europe's finest metro stations.

Getting there

Main station

Location. On Piazza Garibaldi, hub for long-distance trains, metro and the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii.

Long-distance trains. Napoli Centrale is the southern endpoint of the high-speed line from Rome. Trenitalia states a journey time of a little over one hour for the Frecciarossa connection between Rome and Naples, with no transfer. Frecciarossa also runs through between Milan and Naples. The second high-speed operator, Italo, also lists Naples among its stations. According to network operator RFI, the station has a total of 23 platform tracks for passenger service, plus accessible access, audible and visual passenger information, and reserved parking spaces. Beneath the station is the transfer point to Metro Linea 1 and Linea 2, in front of it the Alibus stop. The Circumvesuviana toward Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Sorrento departs from the connected Napoli Garibaldi station, and EAV's tourist express train Campania Express has run with eight trips a day since March 28, 2026.

Opening hours. The station opens and closes in line with the first and last train of the day.

Local quirks

• Caffè sospeso. You pay for two coffees and drink one. The second is left for someone who cannot afford one.
• Metro Linea 6 is a morning line. The second ANM metro line does not run all day. From Municipio to Mostra the first train departs at 7.36 am, the last at 2.50 pm, in the other direction from 7.30 am to 2.44 pm. The frequency is 14 minutes. Anyone heading to Fuorigrotta in the afternoon needs Metro Linea 2 or the bus.
• The cheapest ticket doesn't work everywhere. ANM's 1.30 am-Euro ride is only valid on city buses and funiculars. For Metro Linea 1 and Linea 6, a single ride costs 1.50 Euro. On Metro Linea 2, Cumana, Circumflegrea, and Circumvesuviana, ANM tickets are not valid at all, you need the integrated TIC there. The Alibus requires its own ticket, even for pass and Artecard holders.

Speed limits. built-up areas 50 km/h, outside towns 90 km/h, 110 km/h on expressways, motorway 130 km/h

In rain, the motorway limit is 110 km/h instead of 130, and 90 instead of 110 on expressways. Drivers who have held their license for less than three years may drive at most 100 km/h on the motorway and 90 km/h on expressways. Within built-up areas, 50 km/h is the rule, though signposted city roads allow up to 70 km/h.

Tipping. Not expected. Bills often carry a coperto or servizio. If you were happy, round up.

Tolls. Most motorways are tolled. Take a ticket on entry, pay on exit. No vignette.

Access restrictions. Many historic centres are closed to non-residents. Cameras read the plate and the fine arrives home months later. Hours and boundaries differ from city to city.
